Tribute to Xinomavro- January 29, 2019
While the weather outside was frigid and uncooperative, inside, we were definitely warm and cozy. This event, co-hosted with Our Mom Eugenia, celebrated a most noble grape, Xinomavro. We had five interpretations of the Xinomavro wine and they were paired beautifully with sumptuous plates
The first course was a beautiful winter green salad with Manouri Cheese served with Diofili Rose. Our thoughts are that Rose' this good is not just for the summer.
The second course was Shrimp Saganaki with a tangy, ouzo infused tomato sauce which paired fantastically with the Kokkinos Red. (We aren't afraid to think outside the box.)
The third course, and an overall favorite, was the Beef stuffed baby eggplant with a creamy bechamel topping, which we paired with Argatia Naoussa. The cinnamon notes in the beef stuffing was just the edge that brought out the gorgeous undertones of this elegant wine.
Lamb Kokkinisto with an orzo-mushroom risotto was a perfect match for the 2007 Taralas. The hearty tomato stew and mushrooms brought out the earthy notes of this well aged xinomavro.
Finally, Mama Eugenia knocked it out of the park with a Feta Cheesecake tarte with fresh strawberries and strawberry coule. We served this with a glass of Sparkling White Xinomavro whose dryness really accented the creamy rich cheescake filling.
Guests were inspired and truly appreciated this varietal. We are grateful and thankful that the American public is opening their arms and hearts to Greek wines and to us. ;)
