Independence Day - 2018
As we celebrate our Independence Day, it’s worth looking back for some wine related historical reference. One of the most important battles was that of Yorktown, VIrginia, in 1781. In the center we have one of the state’s finest Bordeaux inspired wines, a testament to the hard work of Virginia’s viticulturists; a fitting tribute to one of America’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson. This country is also grateful for the support of the French during the war, without whom the war outcome could have been very different; thus our second tribute to a beautiful Right Bank Bordeaux, a classic claret. Meanwhile, five thousand miles, on the other side of the Atlantic in a little place in Europe’s southeastern corner, an oppressed people followed the American effort. Letters where exchanged between the American political revolutionaries and the leaders of the Greek people, who in turn, received inspiration and motivation to fight for their own freedom, 45 years after our Declaration of Independence. That spirit is alive and evident, in the wine on the right, a fantastic, bone dry, mineral driven, volcanic offering from Santorini. After all, it is fitting that wine truly unites the people around the world.
