In the area of western Peloponnese, the Mercouri estate is synonymous with the Refosco and Mavrodaphne grapes. In 2015, the blend (85-15%) produced a very fine wine. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak. Deep red in color (both varietals are very dark skinned) this opens up with dark fruit, chocolate and plums. It is rather tight (a good hint of aging capability), with the tannins and its acidity evident. Medium to full body, this is a concentrated wine with a long and persistent finish; yet it hasn't shown all its cards. Patience will be rewarded, but if one insists just decant for an hour or two and light up the grill, because this wine loves meat, sausages, aged steaks, or an elegant tenderloin and of course, aged yellow cheeses.
